Saturday Sessions

Saturday sessions are for experienced archers. No new memberships or introductory lessons will be done on Saturdays.

If you wish to attend Saturday sessions, you must obtain permission from a rangemaster after completing the Advanced test.

Advanced Member certification

At the Archery Club, you need to pass Our Advanced Member Test before you can shoot the targets located at 18 metres. To do the test, you must ask (in-person) any rangemaster, however rangemasters can deny you the test if they feel you aren't quite ready to try the test/need more practice first.

Cost: Free!

Who needs to take this test?

Any recurve archer who wants to shoot at 18 metres, except current rangemasters, are required to take this test.

Compound shooters, talk to us about possible exemption from this test.

Assessment

Our 18-metre Test (aka "the test") consists of three areas of assessment, conducted simultaneously.

  1. Safety: the ability to obey our line calls, as well as appropriate responses to unsafe situations.
  2. Score: At 10 meters you must achieve 230/300 points for olympic recurve, or 245/300 points for compound.
  3. Grouping: your arrows must be of reasonable grouping, where "reasonable" is your examiner's call.

Equipment

You are allowed to use any bow that the club provides, or one that you personally own. However, you cannot change your bow once you have picked one.

You are allowed to use any three to six arrows that the club provides, or three to six that you personally own. However, you cannot swap your arrows in or out once you have picked them.

You are not allowed laser sights, tripods, and other "weird" aids.

Procedures

Our 18m Test consists of shooting 3 arrows each round over 10 rounds, or if needed, shooting 6 arrows over 5 rounds if low on time. The test will be conducted at 10m on a 60cm target.

An examiner will walk you through the testing procedures and can answer any questions you may have about scoring and scoring etiquette.

You will be given one or two practice rounds of three or six arrows depending on which version of the test you will be doing. Your score for each round is the sum of the arrows. If you shoot more than the designated number of arrows, the lowest-scored arrows will be counted for the round.

  • If an arrow bounces off the target, but made a dent on the target, the score of the dent will be counted.
Do not shoot another arrow -- the three-arrow rule still applies.
  • If an arrow bounces off the target, but did not make a dent on the target, that shot has a score of 0.
  • DO NOT TOUCH arrows on the target, yours or otherwise, before scoring has been complete. One chance will be given but if you do it more than once, all future rounds where the arrows are touched before scoring will be given a score of 0.

After passing

Once you pass, you can shoot at the 18-metre targets.
You will also be allowed to shoot on Saturdays.

Passing this test DOES NOT make you a rangemaster. Consult the Rangemasters Guide for application procedures.
